“ You Want A War?” : Scott Hall Returns to WCW & Ignites The Monday Night War

On May 27, 1996 , Scott Hall, formerly known as Razor Ramon , in the World Wrestling Federation ( WWF ) sat in the crowd of an episode of World Championship Wrestling ( WCW). He was rumored to be there as a spy for WWF owner , Vince McMahon. However , that would not be true. Hall left the company the same year and returned after four years. What happened next leads to what is known as the invasion and the birth of the New World Order ( nWo ).

Scott Hall was in the company before leaving for the WWF in 1992. He was paired with Diamond Dallas Page as his manager and made his first appearance at the ‘ Super Brawl 1’ Pay-Per-View. The name for this gimmick Hall used was ‘ The Diamond Studd ’. This gimmick was similar to one used by Ravishing Rick Rude in the WWF. The character was a cocky one who cared about his looks and invited female fans to join him in the ring as Rude did in the WWF. Hall also started his signature toothpick fling at the cameras when they were rolling and he was making his way to the ring. Hall left the company in 1992 and made his way to Vince McMahon’s company to be repackaged as ‘ The Bad Guy ’, Razor Ramon, which would be his most popular gimmick. This one was similar to The Diamond Studd with the characteristics of being cool and cocky.

After departing the WWF in 1996 due to being unhappy with his booking and having to take a pay cut , Scott Hall made his return to WCW. In an interview in 2014 , Hall said that he went back to WCW because of the lighter schedule and better pay.

On the May 27,1996 edition of WCW Monday Nitro , a match between Steve Doll and The Mauler was going on the ring when a tall man dressed in all denim and with his hair slicked back marched his way through the crowd and into the ring . People thought it was a fan trying to get in the ring , thus, it was not. The man was no another than Hall. He still had the Razor Ramon gimmick going on with people thinking that he was there as a scout for Vince McMahon.

Hall climbed across the barricade and made his way to the timekeeper’s area asking for a microphone, leaving Steve Doll and The Mauler to leave the ring so Hall could cut a promo. During the promo, he would call out WCW staff members such as ‘ Mean’ Gene Okerlund , and the president of WCW , Ted Turner. He would also say that he was an ‘ Outsider ’ and would be joined by a partner . The partner would be revealed as Hall’s best friend and rival , Kevin Nash , formerly known as Diesel. Nash debuted on the June 10th episode of Nitro. Hall then ended the promo asking if they wanted a war and declaring that they will get one. This signaled the first shot in the Monday Night War and a new era for WCW. The promo left commentators Tony Schivone and Larry Zbyszko in a state of confusion. Fans decoded Hall’s promo as a “ WWF ” Invasion without actually having Vince McMahon and the WWF involved. This promo also helped kickoff the nWo storyline.

My Final Thoughts:

I will admit that I was confused when I first heard and watched this promo, but, I figured it out. Scott Hall is my favorite wrestler of all time and the nWo is my all time favorite faction. This promo will forever be one of the most iconic ones in pro wrestling history . I’ll probably do an invasion of The Outsiders in the future.

Eric Gale – Forecast

One of the most successful albums ever from guitarist Eric Gale – a laidback understated player whose mellow sound had a tremendous influence on mainstream jazz funk in the 70s! The album takes off from the late 60s CTI and Verve sessions by Wes Montgomery – and features Gale riffing out chromatically over tightly woven arrangements by Bob James, who also plays keyboards on the set. There’s no standout funky numbers on the record, but it’s got a great conception overall – with lots of dreamy grooves that sound very nice! (Dusty Groove).

Hello everyone! Here is my next rec list. I have limited this to only finished multi-chapter fics that are not part of a series (unless its the main fic with lots of side stories). This unfortunatley excludes some of my other favorites. Hopefully at some point I will make a post about my favorite series. Except he typed the wrong number, and has been texting someone named Steve– who is blond, 28, teaches art and somehow charmed by Tonys drunk rambles. One conversation turns into another, and soon they are texting and talking and flirting every day for weeks until Tony finally takes a chance and asks Steve to meet in person. Steve replies that he and his boyfriend Bucky would be thrilled to meet. Devastated, and feeling betrayed, Tony stops talking to Steve all together, and their budding relationship comes to a screeching halt. But Bucky has been eavesdropping on their conversations and texts and is halfway in love with Tony too, so he takes it upon himself to fix the rift between Steve and Tony. Tony isn’t sure about it at first, but after some cute videos, sexy selfies, several date nights, Tony starts to think that the three of them may actually work. Can Bucky and Steve convince Tony there is enough room in their bed and their arms for each other AND him? Will this Long Distance texting and phone call relationship ever make it into the same zip code?

Of Spiders and Super Soldiers by AuddieAussie: After the hell that was Ultron and the Sokovia Accords, Tony doesn't blame the team for wanting nothing to do with him. To make up for past mistakes, Tony disappears into his lab and focuses on using his money and brains to provide the Avengers with more fancy tech than they'll ever need. By doing this, he also doesn't have to worry about Steve's grim frown, Bucky's hateful gaze, or everyone else's cold annoyance. For six long months, this formula worked, but then fate decided to be a Loki-like dick and Tony wasn't sure how it happened, but in the span of one week, he'd somehow acquired a kid.

“Diamond Studd and Dallas Page may not be joined professionally by a wrestler-manager relationship anymore, but they remain friends outside the ring. Which is why, when Studd was asked to appear on an episode of Sports Monster, a parody of sports wrap-up shows that airs weekly on the HBO-owned Comedy Central cable network, he asked Page to come along.

“When the producers were searching for the perfect professional wrestler to grace their program, they naturally turned to me,” Studd told WCW Magazine. “I’m great-looking. I’m successful, I am, as Dallas has always said, 298 pounds of twisted steel and sex appeal. It sounded like fun, so I thought I’d bring Dallas along.”

“A lot of people don’t realize it because of all my success in the ring, but I am a big fan of comedy,” Page said. “I’ve always preferred ensemble comedy shows like Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Saturday Night Live, and SCTV.

“I gotta say, I liked the Sports Monster concept right off the bat,” Page continued. “In a lot of ways it’s like SCTV, it has that kind of feel, but instead of focusing on a fictional television station, the show centers on the activities of just one program: Sports Monster, one of those weekly shows like ESPN’s SportsCenter of CBS’ Inside The NFL.”

One thing Page didn’t like, however, was the “hurry up and wait” syndrome of taping a television program.

“Hey, brother, I’m a man of action,” Page explained. “When I’m doing commentary for WCW broadcasts, I’m at the desk, the matches take place, and I string my pearls of wisdom for the lucky audience at home. But for something like this, there’s a makeup call, then there’s a lighting check, then there’s a producers’ meeting, then there’s this meeting, and that meeting and the sound check and all the rest of it. Man, I just don’t have that kind of patience!”

Diamond Studd agreed.

“Anybody who’s seen me wrestle knows that I’m all business. I enter the ring, I annihilate my opponent, and I return to the dressing room. It’s that simple, and that easily done. When we got to the HBO studies, I realized it was a good thing I had Dallas along, because there’s a lot of waiting that goes on taping a show like that. Dallas is a pretty funny guy; he helped make the waiting that much more bearable.”

When all the preparations were complete, it was time for Page and Studd to tape their segment: An interview with Sports Monster commentator Tony Cheese who was promoting an upcoming WCW event at the fictional Greater Hoboken Coliseum (”Join me and 15,000 of my closest friends...”).

Leading into the interview segment, Tony Cheese introduced his guests this way: “Next Saturday night it’s a winner-take-all stomp-on-your-face body-slamming rafter-jamming Texas death math featuring the current world champion, Lizard-Face McCoy, and the man to my immediate right, the one, the only, when you’re good you’re good, but when you’re bad you’re better, Mr. Diamond Studd.”

“The only problem there,” Studd said, “was they came p with a bogus name for their World champion. I’ve never heard of any wrestler named McCoy, and the only competitor with a lizard-face that I know of is ‘Z-Man’ Tom Zenk. Hahaha!”

When the taping was complete, Page displayed his full range of modesty: “The bottom line is that we had a good time, we probably helped the folks at Sports Monster pull in their highest ratings ever, and the fans are blessed with our presence on yet another television program.”

Studd shifted a toothpick from one side of his mouth to the other. “As far as I’m concerned, the best part of the program was when they showed the clip of me destroying another pathetic opponent with my ‘diamond death drop.’ Ain’t nothing more entertaining than that!”

Say Hello To The Bad Guy: The WWF Debut Of Razor Ramon

Hey Everyone! I am very excited to bring this article to you all! If you’ve been following me here on Tumblr or on social media , I always say that Razor Ramon/Scott Hall is my favorite wrestler of all time. I’ve even posted him on here on a few times. In this article , I’ll be sharing the story of Razor’s WWF debut against the father of a former WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion.

Before coming to the WWF , Scott Hall would be in World Championship Wrestling under the name , The Diamond Studd, from 1991 to 1992. His first run with the company was in 1989. This character would help lay the foundation for the Razor Ramon gimmick. This meant that he would starting using toothpicks and flicking them at any camera in his sight. Diamond Dallas Page has stated the toothpick came to mind when he and Hall were eating at a local Waffle House. Page was also going to join Hall in the toothpick flicking , thus , one accidentally fell out of his mouth when the duo were cutting a promo. Thus , Hall would leave WCW in 1992 and make his return to the company four years later .

In 1992, Hall signed with the World Wrestling Federation and took the name , Razor Ramon, which would be his most popular character. He would be described as a stylish , egotistical , and shady rascal from Miami , Florida. The inspiration for Razor Ramon would come from Tony Montana, the protagonist , and the deuteragonist , Manny Ribera , from the popular movie , ‘ Scarface ’. His signature catchphrase, “ Say Hello To The Bad Guy ” , along with his nickname , ‘ The Bad Guy ’, would also be inspired by the film as well. This gimmick would be similar to his Diamond Studd gimmick would be how cool and cocky both were. Hall would state that he told this idea to Vince McMahon as a joke. He would say lines from the film in Cuban accent for McMahon and Pat Patterson. He would also pitch ideas for vignettes with this character. The idea got approved. McMahon and Patterson would give him the name , Razor, nevertheless , the name Ramon would be given to Hall for the gimmick by Tito Santana. He soon went to McMahon with the name and it stuck. Ramon would make his first appearance in the company during a dark match on ‘ Wrestling Challenge ’ in 1992. Thus , Ramon’s vignettes would keep dropping on weekly episodes of ‘ WWF Superstars ’ in 1992. Therefore , The Bad Guy would be making his TV debut the same year.

On the August 8 , 1992 episode of ‘ WWF Superstars’ , Paul Van Dale , the father of current WWE Superstar, Carmella , would be waiting in the ring. Thus , fans would hear what sounded like a car crash before music began to play . Through the curtain came Razor Ramon. Razor would be known as a Heel for his debut. He would wear gold necklaces to ring and have his signature toothpick in his mouth. After making his entrance , Ramon would always hand his gold necklaces off to an attendant at ringside. He would threaten the attendant by telling them if something happened to his necklaces , something would happen to them in return. He would soon flick the toothpick he had at the attendant. Ramon would defeat Van Dale by using his signature move , ‘ The Razor’s Edge ’. This move is known as a Crucifix Powerbomb. In order to let fans know he was going to do it , Ramon would spread his arms out as if his body were a cross before placing his opponent ‘s head between his legs and grabbing their stomach and lifting them over his shoulders. He would hold their arms over his head before dropping to his knees or running and throwing them onto the mat. Other names for the move would be ‘ Diamond’s Edge ’ and ‘ Outsiders’ Edge ’. ( Current WWE Superstar, Damian Priest, adopted the move as a tribute to Ramon.).

Ramon would go on to be a four time Intercontinental Champion and a founding member of the New World Order ( nWo). He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014 as a solo member and inducted in 2020 as a member of the nWo. He would also be a member of the backstage group known as ‘ The Kliq’. This group consisted of Hall, Kevin Nash ( Diesel ) , Hunter Hearst Helmsley ( Triple H) , Shawn Michaels , and Sean Waltman ( The Kid , 123 Kid, Syxx-PAC , X- PAC). Scott Hall would pass away on March 14,2022 at the age of 63.

Razor Ramon would go on to inspire wrestlers such as Damian Priest. Priest has stated that Ramon was one of his favorite wrestlers as a kid.

My Final Thoughts:

Watching Razor Ramon’s debut makes me understand how much of an impact he had in the wrestling business. To me , Razor was one of those wrestlers who made it look cool to be the Bad Guy. He was a phenomenal wrestler. There will never be another Razor Ramon.

Al Kooper - You Never Know Who Your Friends Are (US 1969)

You Never Know Who Your Friends Are was the second album by New York City-based multi-instrumentalist Al Kooper, issued in 1969 on Columbia Records.

A continuation of sorts of his début, the album displays another eclectic mix of rock, rhythm and blues, jazz, pop, and blues, though without the psychedelics that had somewhat permeated through I Stand Alone. Utilizing a large group of musicians under the direction of Charlie Calello, known collectively as "The Al Kooper Big Band", Kooper also strayed away from the heavy string orchestrations of his début. Relying on more original compositions, with nine of twelve tracks by Kooper (with the remaining three by Harry Nilsson), and Motown staff songwriters, the album further helped to cement Kooper's reputation.

Al Kooper's second solo album is a bit more uneven than its predecessor, I Stand Alone, for understandable reasons -- it would have been nothing less than a miracle for Kooper to have matched the consistency and daring of that album, and he doesn't have quite the same array of memorable tunes here. He's still ranging freely, however, through pop, jazz, R&B, and soul, with some songs that are among the most glorious of his output. "Magic in My Sock" is a good enough opener, making up in its virtuoso horn parts and guitar for what it lacks in melodic invention; "Lucille" is hardly the best ballad that Kooper has ever written, but it forms a good bridge to "Too Busy Thinkin' About My Baby," a Motown cover that's one of the highlights of Kooper's entire output -- from a black singer this track would be a priceless gem, but coming from Kooper it's extraordinary in its every nuance.

You get some blues instrumental (principally piano-based) and an abortive but entertaining effort at pop/rock with the title tune, and then Kooper plunges into arty balladry with the hauntingly beautiful "The Great American Marriage/Nothing." He goes back into Motown territory, just as successful as before, on "I Don't Know Why I Love You," and back to moody art-song with Harry Nilsson's "Mourning Glory Story." Kooper returns to the soulful side of rock on "Anna Lee (What Can I Do for You)" and finishes with "I'm Never Gonna Let You Down" -- the latter would be worth the price of the album by itself, a soaring, more lyrical and moody original classic that manages to be unpretentious yet epic in its treatment. »»» Al Kooper Biography ««« Al Kooper (born Alan Peter Kuperschmidt; February 5, 1944) is an American songwriter, record producer and musician, known for organizing Blood, Sweat & Tears (although he did not stay with the group long enough to share its popularity), providing studio support for Bob Dylan when he went electric in 1965, and also bringing together guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills to record the Super Session album. He has had a successful solo career since then, written music for film soundtracks, and has also lectured in musical composition. He continues to perform live.

Kooper, born in Brooklyn, grew up in Hollis Hills, Queens, New York. His first musical success was as a fourteen-year-old guitarist in The Royal Teens, best known for their 1958 ABC Records novelty twelve-bar blues riff, "Short Shorts". In 1960, he joined the songwriting team of Bob Brass and Irwin Levine, and wrote "This Diamond Ring", which became a hit for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. When he was twenty-one, Kooper moved to Greenwich Village.

He performed with Bob Dylan in concert in 1965, and in the recording studio in 1965 and 1966, including playing Hammond organ with Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Kooper also played the Hammond organ riffs on Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone". It was in those recording sessions that Kooper met and befriended Mike Bloomfield, whose guitar-playing he admired. He worked extensively with Bloomfield for a number of years. Kooper played organ once again with Dylan during his 1981 world tour.

Kooper joined The Blues Project as their keyboardist in 1965, leaving the band shortly before their gig at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. He formed Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1967, leaving after the group's first album, Child Is Father to the Man, due to creative differences in 1968. He recorded Super Session with Bloomfield and Stills in 1968 as well, and in 1969 he collaborated with 15-year-old guitarist Shuggie Otis on the album Kooper Session. In 1975 he produced the debut album by The Tubes.

Kooper has played on hundreds of records, including ones by The Rolling Stones, B. B. King, The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Alice Cooper, and Cream. On occasion, he has even overdubbed on his own efforts, as on The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper and on other albums, as "Roosevelt Gook".[4] After moving to Atlanta in 1972, he discovered the band Lynyrd Skynyrd, and produced and performed on their first three albums, including the single "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". Kooper also wrote the score for the TV series Crime Story and the film The Landlord and has also written music for several made-for-television movies. He was also the musical force behind many of the children series, Banana Splits pop tunes, including "You're the Lovin' End."

Kooper has published a memoir, Backstage Passes: Rock 'n' Roll Life In The Sixties (1977), now available in revised form as Backstage Passes & Backstabbing Bastards: Memoirs of a Rock 'N' Roll Survivor (1998). The latter includes indictments against "manipulators" within the music industry, including his one-time business manager, Stan Polley. His status as a published author enabled him to join (and act as musical director of) the Rock Bottom Remainders, a band made up of writers including Dave Barry, Stephen King, Amy Tan, & Matt Groening.

Kooper is currently retired from teaching songwriting and recording production at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and plays weekend concerts with his bands The ReKooperators and The Funky Faculty. In 2008, he participated in the production of the album Psalngs, the debut release of Canadian musician John Lefebvre and was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, TN.

In 2005 Martin Scorsese produced a documentary, No Direction Home: Bob Dylan for the PBS American Masters Series, Kooper's most notable playing with Dylan is the organ parts on "Like a Rolling Stone". Kooper had been invited to the session as an observer, and hoped to be allowed to sit in on guitar, his primary musical instrument. Kooper uncased his guitar and began tuning it. After hearing Mike Bloomfield, who was the hired session guitarist for the sessions, warming up in the room, Kooper concluded that Bloomfield at that point, was a much better guitarist, so Kooper put his guitar aside and retreated into the control room.

As the recording sessions progressed, keyboardist Paul Griffin was moved from the Hammond organ to piano. Kooper quickly suggested to producer Tom Wilson that he had a "great organ part" for the song (which he later confessed was just a ruse to play in the session), and Wilson responded, "Al, you're not an organ player, you're a guitar player", but Kooper stood his ground. Before Wilson could explicitly reject Kooper's suggestion, he was interrupted by a phone call in the control room. Kooper immediately went into the studio and sat down at the organ, though he had rarely played organ before the session. Wilson quickly returned, and was shocked to find Kooper in the studio. By this time, Kooper had been playing along with Dylan and The Band, his organ can be heard coming in an eighth-note just behind the other members of the band, as Kooper followed to make sure he was playing the proper chords. During a playback of tracks in the control room, when asked about the organ track, Dylan was emphatic: "Turn the organ up!"

Gil Evans Out Of The Cool Rar

Out of the Cool, released in 1960, was the first recording Gil Evans issued after three straight albums with Miles Davis -- Sketches of Spain being the final one before this. Evans had learned much from Davis about improvisation, instinct, and space (the trumpeter learned plenty, too, especially about color, texture, and dynamic tension). Evans orchestrates less here, instead concentrating on the rhythm section built around Elvin Jones, Charlie Persip, bassist Ron Carter, and guitarist Ray Crawford. The maestro in the piano chair also assembled a crack horn section for this date, with Ray Beckinstein, Budd Johnson, and Eddie Caine on saxophones, trombonists Jimmy Knepper, Keg Johnson, and bass trombonist Tony Studd, with Johnny Coles and Phil Sunkel on trumpet, Bill Barber on tuba, and Bob Tricarico on flute, bassoon, and piccolo. The music here is of a wondrous variety, bookended by two stellar Evans compositions in 'La Nevada,' and 'Sunken Treasure.' The middle of the record is filled out by the lovely standard 'Where Flamingos Fly,' Kurt Weill-Bertolt Brecht's 'Bilbao Song,' and George Russell's classic 'Stratusphunk.' The sonics are alternately warm, breezy, and nocturnal, especially on the 15-plus-minute opener which captures the laid-back West Coast cool jazz feel juxtaposed by the percolating, even bubbling hot rhythmic pulse of the tough streets of Las Vegas. The horns are held back for long periods in the mix and the drums pop right up front, Crawford's solo -- drenched in funky blues -- is smoking. When the trombones re-enter, they are slow and moaning, and the piccolo digs in for an in the pocket, pulsing break. Whoa.

Things are brought back to the lyrical impressionism Evans is most well known for at the beginning of 'Where Flamingos Fly.' Following a four-note theme on guitar, flute, tuba, and trombone, it comes out dramatic and blue, but utterly spacious and warm. The melancholy feels like the tune 'Summertime' in the trombone melody, but shifts toward something less impressionistic and more expressionist entirely by the use of gentle dissonance by the second verse as the horns begin to ratchet things up just a bit, allowing Persip and Jones to play in the middle on a variety of percussion instruments before the tune takes on a New Orleans feel, and indeed traces much of orchestral jazz history over the course of its five minutes without breaking a sweat. 'Stratusphunk' is the most angular tune here, but Evans and company lend such an element of swing to the tune that its edges are barely experienced by the listener. For all his seriousness, there was a great deal of warmth and humor in Evans' approach to arranging. His use of the bassoon as a sound effects instrument at the beginning is one such moment emerging right out of the bass trombone. At first, the walking bassline played by Carter feels at odds with the lithe and limber horn lines which begin to assert themselves in full finger popping swing etiquette, but Carter seamlessly blends in. Again, Crawford's guitar solo in the midst of all that brass is the voice of song itself, but it's funky before Johnny Coles' fine trumpet solo ushers in an entirely new chart for the brass. The final cut, 'Sunken Treasure,' is a moody piece of noir that keeps its pulse inside the role of bass trombone and tuba. Percussion here, with maracas, is more of a coloration device, and the blues emerge from the trumpets and from Carter. It's an odd way to close a record, but its deep-night feel is something that may echo the 'cool' yet looks toward something deeper and hotter -- which is exactly what followed later with Into the Hot. This set is not only brilliant, it's fun.
